Former US Congressman admits being agent for banned Islamic terrorist charity

A former US Congressman pleaded guilty today to obstruction of justice and working as an unregistered agent for a foreign charity linked to global terrorism.

Mark Deli Siljander, 59, a former US representative from Michigan, pleaded guilty to charges contained in a 2008 indictment related to his work for the Islamic American Relief Agency (IARA) of Columbia, Missouri.

Co-defendant Abdel Azim El-Siddig, a former IARA fundraiser, also pleaded guilty to conspiring with Siljander and others to hire Siljander to lobby for IARA’s removal from a Senate Finance Committee list of charities suspected of having terrorist ties.

Siljander, who also had been an alternate representative to the United Nations General Assembly, had concealed the organization for whom he was lobbying.

NYC Subway Bomb Plot Linked to al Qaeda

A failed plot to set off bombs in the New York subway system last year was part of a larger Al Qaeda terrorist conspiracy that planned a similar attack in England, U.S. prosecutors said Wednesday.

In an indictment unsealed Wednesday, prosecutors added several Al Qaeda figures to the case, including Adnan Shukrijumah, an FBI most-wanted terrorist.

Shukrijumah, one of the Al Qaeda leaders in charge of plotting attacks worldwide, was directly involved in recruiting and plotting the New York attack, prosecutors said. Attorney General Eric Holder has called that plot one of the most dangerous since 9/11.

Two of the men indicted Wednesday — Abid Naseer and Tariq Ur Rehman — were linked to a previously undisclosed companion plot in England.

Abu Sayyaf Terrorists Shoot, Hack Civilians in Philippines, Killing Four

Approximately 30 hooded Abu Sayyaf Jihadist terrorists, shot and hacked terrified, innocent victims running for their lives in the southern Philippines, police said Thursday. Four civilians died and six were wounded in the attack.

The Al Qaeda-linked terrorists were likely trying to divert Philippine troops from a major offensive nearby, according to Antonio Mendoza, police chief for the island province of Basilan, where the terrorist raid occurred.

Most of the victims were commuters in a passenger jeep headed home from Basilan’s capital of Isabela City. The attackers were positioned on a hill overlooking a road and opened fire with small arms. Two passengers were killed instantly but others leapt from the vehicle to escape, Mendoza reported.

“They were fired upon as they ran. One of the attackers hacked a 10-year-old boy, who survived,” Mendoza told The Associated Press.

The daylight ambush is the latest violence committed by Abu Sayyaf and its allied armed groups on Basilan, a predominantly Muslim island about 550 miles (880 kilometers) south of Manila.

Two weeks ago, Abu Sayyaf terrorists beheaded three loggers in a rain forest near Maluso.

Mendoza, who heads a 675-strong force, said he has sought at least 300 more policemen to better secure Basilan towns. About 100 extra police commandos were deployed to Basilan weeks ago to reinforce marines and army troops hunting Abu Sayyaf fighters.

Some 400 Abu Sayyaf terrorists operate in Basilan and on nearby Jolo island and the Zamboanga peninsula. They remain a major security threat as part of a decades-long Muslim insurgency.

The Abu Sayyaf, founded in Basilan in 1991, is believed by U.S. and Philippine security officials to have received funds and training from Osama bin Laden’s network. Evidence also indicates that funding has come from other Saudi and Persian Gulf sources and captured documents in Iraq revealed that Saddam Hussein’s regime provided support to Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines.

Al Qaeda Launches Online English-Language Magazine

Inspire: The New Al Qaeda Online English-Language Magazine

Al Qaeda posted an online propaganda magazine in English on Tuesday, a move that could help the terror group recruit inside the United States and Europe.

The magazine, called Inspire, is being run by Al-Qaeda  in Yemen, which continues to play a prominent role in the Jihadist group’s global activities.

It is easy to snicker at these efforts, but they must be taken seriously. Language which may seem corny or trite to regular Americans can have deep motivational meanings for young Muslims who are already predisposed to Jihad. And clearly America has a serious domestic Jihad problem with arrests and incidents becoming more numerous in the past year, from Boston and New York to Fort Hood and Little Rock, from North Carolina to California and from Oregon and Colorado to Georgia and Florida.

The Jihadists have already had great success in infiltrating our homeland. They recognize this and the new magazine “Inspire” is designed to cultivate those already successful efforts. This is not something to be taken lightly…

NY Daily News Editorial: The threat keeps growing: List of terrorists in our midst gets longer and longer

Late in 2009 TTB published an article called “A Year of Jihad In America,” in which we basically listed numerous violent Jihadist incidents which had occurred in America over the previous year:

https://terrortrendsbulletin.wordpress.com/2009/11/29/a-year-of-jihad-in-america-december-2008-to-december-2009/

Yesterday, ironically on the same day in which a car bomb was discovered in New York’s Times Square, the New York Daily News came out with an excellent editorial which should be required reading for every American. In it, they listed many of the Jihadist terrorists which have been uncovered in our midst.

Homegrown Jihad has become a huge problem and we have yet to even come to terms with it as a nation…

The Latest from NEFA Foundation: Operation Gibraltar: A Foiled Al-Qaida Plot Against NATO Ships

The absolutely indispensable NEFA foundation has produced another important report, this one on a failed Al Qaeda plot to attack NATO naval ships in the strait of Gibraltar, not unlike the attack on the USS Cole.

Though this plot took place back in 2002, it is important not just from an historical perspective, but also in other ways. It demonstrates the far reach of Al Qaeda and the lengths that they will go to to attempt to attack the West. Note also that the plot was foiled as a result of questioning of suspects as…gasp…Guantanamo Bay, Cuba…

U.S. Computer Engineer and Accountant Charged With Helping Al Qaeda

Some folks believe that poverty is the root cause of Jihad.

If that is so, then how do they explain a computer engineer and an accountant, formerly employees of Wall Street’s Lehman Brothers and PriceWaterhouseCoopers, going Jihadi and helping Al Qaeda, including by purchasing watches commonly used in making bombs?

Wesam El-Hanafi, 33, and Sabirhan Hasanoff, 34, are both American citizens who attended New York public schools and Baruch College in New York.

They appeared to be normal, middle class Americans with good educations and bright futures.

Unfortunately, back in 2008 they decided to take an oath of allegiance to Al Qaeda…and so the story begins…read more at UPI.com:

Denver Post Sees No Dots to Connect in Article About Anwar Al-Awlaki

Maybe I am being overly dramatic, but the article linked below from the Denver Post reminds me of all the Germans who claimed they had nothing to do with the Nazis when Allied troops moved in to occupy Germany in 1945.

Isn’t it just a tad odd that this guy Anwar Al-Awlaki, who has become an Al Qaeda terrorist mastermind, made no impression at all in his time in Colorado?

No one at the mosques he preached at seems to even remember anything about the guy–except the members who either didn’t like him or never heard him say anything bad or who don’t want their names revealed that is…

Then there’s the statement in the article that all Al-Awlaki’s files had been disposed of 8 years ago. It’s too bad that Bruce Finley of the Denver Post isn’t more curious because 8 years ago is about when Al-Awlaki had been ID’d by the FBI as an Al Qaeda recruiter and fled the country.

Muslim cleric targeted by U.S. made little impression during Colorado years

But there IS more to Al-Awlaki’s time at the Denver mosque than many people remember. I wrote about it a couple of months ago for a blog down in Louisiana…

SOMEONE was saying some things in that Denver mosque that crossed over the line…but no one remembers, and those files got thrown out years ago…

Al Qaeda threatens to attack UK versus USA World Cup Match

On 12 June, the British and American soccer teams are scheduled to face off in South Africa as part of what is surely one of the world’s largest sporting events, the World Cup.

Al Qaeda has decided to interject itself into the mix as well, threatening to attack that game, as has been widely reported in British media:

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/04/10/al-qaeda-threats-to-attack-during-england-world-cup-match-against-usa-115875-22175319/

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/2010/04/10/al-qaeda-in-threat-to-england-and-usa-fans-at-world-cup-86908-22175674/

These are surely threats that should be taken seriously.

First of all, the wing of Al Qaeda which made the threat, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AGIM), has a very violent history and is one of the most active wings of the terrorist organization. It doesn’t get much coverage in the USA, but it is a serious problem in Africa.

Secondly, Islam has been on the rise in South Africa for some years now, particularly Salafi Islam, thanks to the Saudis. This is of course the sect of Sunni Islam which gave birth to Al Qaeda in the first place. Similar to Mumbai, any Al Qaeda attackers can probably depend upon a local support structure for intelligence, reconnaissance and logistics.

Third, South Africa is a country that has been wracked by a great deal of violence in the past decade. Crime, particularly murder, is a huge problem there and the authorities already have their hands full.

Here’s hoping that the South Africans bring in outside help for security at this event. Specific threats from Jihadists are not to be taken lightly. They lose their credibility if they do not follow through.
