Former New Jersey resident, Hezbollah member arrested in Paraguay

A former New Jersey resident indicted by federal authorities last year over his role in a U.S.-based Hezbollah terror cell was arrested in Paraguay on Tuesday and faces extradition to the United States.

Moussa Ali Hamdan, 38, a native of Lebanon who for a time lived in a $600-a-month efficiency apartment in West Collingswood, New Jersey, was a central figure in a four-year probe led by the FBI’s Philadelphia Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Times Square Bomber Faisal Shahzad was no Unknown Loner; But the Obama Admin Took Him off Terror Watch List

As long ago as 2004, Faisal Shahzad was being checked out by federal investigators.

Then along comes the Obama administration and he gets removed from the terror watch list…

New York Times Square Car Bomb Bulletin

By now, most readers of Terror Trends Bulletin know that a car bomb was discovered in New York’s Times Square last night. It was discovered just as it was fizzling out after failing to detonate.

Just as was the case with the “Fruit of the Boom Underwear Bomber” over the skies of Detroit on Christmas Day, America was saved from a terrible attack only by the incompetence of its enemies. This illustrates the inadequacy of emphasizing security measures as the chief means of defending ourselves against Jihad. He who tries to defend everything defends nothing. Sooner or later, we will be forced to confront our enemies’ threat doctrine and take a much wider and more comprehensive approach to defending ourselves.

Unfortunately, I feel that things will have to get much worse before America confronts the ongoing and longstanding threat from Jihad.

The bomb in Times Square was located inside a Nissan Pathfinder SUV and was made up of two 5-gallon gasoline containers, M-88 firecrackers, three propane tanks and a metal box which contained what appeared to be fertilizer. Press reports make no mention of shrapnel or other explosives. This appears to be a bomb that was designed to create a fireball. But it also was a bomb that seems to have had some missing components.

For instance, the fertilizer was either not of a type that could be made to explode or else it was not soaked in kerosene or diesel fuel to prepare it for ignition. It is difficult to perceive how this device was supposed to work, though we are certain that NYPD is not releasing all details of its make up, so it is impossible to know.

Unfortunately, press reports are repeatedly quoting New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who referred to the device as “amateurish.” This is a classic case of a politician with no real knowledge making a statement that was certainly not helpful. The reason why this label is unhelpful is because it tends to downplay the seriousness of this attempt. Moreover, the use of propane (or butane or acetylene) tanks in conjunction with conventional explosives is a common and very lethal methodology for VBIEDs (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices). A large version of this was used in the October 23rd, 1983, bomb which killed 241 US servicemen in Beirut, Lebanon.

Propane tanks have also been used in IEDs in Iraq. Moreover, the use of household goods, such as those used in this device, is a method used by Jihadists in London previously. Except for the M-88 firecrackers, everything mentioned in the NYPD press conference is available at WalMart.

Had this bomb detonated, no one would have been referring to it as “amateurish.” We were very fortunate that something went awry in the detonation process because, given the crowded streets in Times Square at the time, there is every possibility that this bomb could have caused a lot of casualties, including horrific burns on victims in the area.

We should not assume that just because this bomb fizzled and appeared to be assembled incorrectly that it was not the work of Jihadists. Jihadists planted two bombs very similar to this one in the UK in 2007. The bombs were placed in parked cars near areas with high pedestrian traffic and included petrol cans and propane tanks. Just as in Times Square last night, passer-bys noticed smoke and fumes coming from one of the vehicles and called authorities in to take care of the matter. So just because the bomb failed does not mean that it wasn’t planted by a “real terrorist.” All it means is that it was planted by a terrorist who wasn’t up to speed on demolitions.

Keep in mind that this bomb contained three propane tanks. Here is an indication of the fire created by a single propane tank exploding (in this case, the handiwork of some really incredibly moronic individuals):

http://www.stupidvideos.com/video/stunts/5_Gallon_Propane_Tank_Explosion/

In his press conference on Sunday afternoon, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly indicated that they may have video footage from surveillance cameras of an individual associated with the Nissan Pathfinder. There are also reports that police were able to collect fingerprints at the scene. Why would a bomber leave fingerprints?

Remember, the guy who planted that bomb figured on it blowing up and burning. He wasn’t worried about fingerprints on the Nissan or any of the component parts. Fortunately, he screwed up and pedestrians in Times Square were spared from incineration.

As for the Nissan Pathfinder, the Connecticut license plates mounted on it were not registered to it, but to a Ford truck. There are conflicting stories about the Ford truck. Press reports indicated that the owner of the Ford claimed that he sent it to a junkyard for disposal long ago. But Commissioner Kelly stated in his press conference that the Ford truck was in for “repairs.” There may be further developments associated with this aspect of the investigation.

At this point there is no way to determine conclusively who planted this bomb. The Pakistan Taliban released a video claiming responsibility in retaliation for the recent killing of Al Qaeda leaders in Iraq, but the Pakistan Taliban have claimed responsibility for incidents in the past that they were clearly not associated with. It should be noted, however, that Jihadist groups are different from the terrorist groups of the 1970s and 1980s, like Baader-Meinhoff, the Provo IRA and the Red Brigades, in that they don’t necessarily feel compelled to lay claim to their work, at least not immediately on the heels of an attack. Their outlook is different in that they are not doing this to “terrorize” us, they are doing it because they are at war with us and this is but one operation in a long, civilizational, global war.

One thing that makes us feel that there may be some credence to the Taliban’s claim of responsibility was the promptness of that claim. Using the news aggregator NewsNow.co.uk, we determined that the first NEWS report of the Taliban claim was by the British Channel 4 at 0341hrs Central Daylight Time. This means that the Taliban would have had to released that video just a few hours after the incident. It seems unlikely that they would have been able to do so in such a short time frame without prior knowledge of the incident. So, even though there is no “evidence” of Taliban involvement, that doesn’t mean that the Taliban weren’t involved in some way.

There are also reports of video surveillance indicating that a possible suspect seen nearby was identified as “white.” Again, this does not mean that this wasn’t a Jihadist operation. The leader of the Jihadi cell in North Carolina that was plotting to infiltrate and attack Marine Corps Base Quantico was blonde-haired and blue-eyed. John Walker Lindh, the American Taliban, was white as well.

For his part, Senator Charles Schumer of New York has already declared that this was almost surely the work of a “lone wolf.” Once again, we have a case of an ignorant politician opening his mouth in a vacuum of knowledge. What Schumer based his statement on is unclear, but no one else in New York or Washington DC is saying anything like that about a motive or suspect in this case.

There are many obvious reasons why a Jihadist group might want to target Times Square on a Saturday night, but none more significant than the fact that the area is teaming with people on a spring night. The fact that Viacom’s headquarters is nearby may or may not be a motive (Viacom is the owner of South Park, the cartoon which did a spoof on Mohammed recently). One would think that, had the terrorists been targeting Viacom, they would have done so during normal business hours. The same goes for the big armed forces recruiting center nearby.

We will continue to track developments as they occur.

NY Daily News Editorial: The threat keeps growing: List of terrorists in our midst gets longer and longer

Late in 2009 TTB published an article called “A Year of Jihad In America,” in which we basically listed numerous violent Jihadist incidents which had occurred in America over the previous year:

https://terrortrendsbulletin.wordpress.com/2009/11/29/a-year-of-jihad-in-america-december-2008-to-december-2009/

Yesterday, ironically on the same day in which a car bomb was discovered in New York’s Times Square, the New York Daily News came out with an excellent editorial which should be required reading for every American. In it, they listed many of the Jihadist terrorists which have been uncovered in our midst.

Homegrown Jihad has become a huge problem and we have yet to even come to terms with it as a nation…

U.S. Computer Engineer and Accountant Charged With Helping Al Qaeda

Some folks believe that poverty is the root cause of Jihad.

If that is so, then how do they explain a computer engineer and an accountant, formerly employees of Wall Street’s Lehman Brothers and PriceWaterhouseCoopers, going Jihadi and helping Al Qaeda, including by purchasing watches commonly used in making bombs?

Wesam El-Hanafi, 33, and Sabirhan Hasanoff, 34, are both American citizens who attended New York public schools and Baruch College in New York.

They appeared to be normal, middle class Americans with good educations and bright futures.

Unfortunately, back in 2008 they decided to take an oath of allegiance to Al Qaeda…and so the story begins…read more at UPI.com:

Denver Post Sees No Dots to Connect in Article About Anwar Al-Awlaki

Maybe I am being overly dramatic, but the article linked below from the Denver Post reminds me of all the Germans who claimed they had nothing to do with the Nazis when Allied troops moved in to occupy Germany in 1945.

Isn’t it just a tad odd that this guy Anwar Al-Awlaki, who has become an Al Qaeda terrorist mastermind, made no impression at all in his time in Colorado?

No one at the mosques he preached at seems to even remember anything about the guy–except the members who either didn’t like him or never heard him say anything bad or who don’t want their names revealed that is…

Then there’s the statement in the article that all Al-Awlaki’s files had been disposed of 8 years ago. It’s too bad that Bruce Finley of the Denver Post isn’t more curious because 8 years ago is about when Al-Awlaki had been ID’d by the FBI as an Al Qaeda recruiter and fled the country.

Muslim cleric targeted by U.S. made little impression during Colorado years

But there IS more to Al-Awlaki’s time at the Denver mosque than many people remember. I wrote about it a couple of months ago for a blog down in Louisiana…

SOMEONE was saying some things in that Denver mosque that crossed over the line…but no one remembers, and those files got thrown out years ago…

Confirming what we already knew about the Arkansas recruiting station murders

The Muslim man who killed one US Army soldier and wounding another outside a Little Rock, Arkansas military recruiting center last spring has asked a judge to change his plea to guilty, claiming ties to Al Qaeda.

Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad is merely confirming what many already realized. The Little Rock Army Recruiting Center attack has basically been forgotten and the media has either ignored or failed to realize the obvious pattern that it set.

We are witnessing another MASSIVE intelligence failure with regard to Yemen and a subsequent failure to properly respond to the series of attacks in the US which have been tied to Al Qaeda in Yemen.

It is now apparent that Al Qaeda switched a major portion of its Jihadi training to Yemen at least as long ago as 2008 and we failed to detect it.

The Little Rock shooter (Muhammad), a convert to Islam at Tennessee Tech, dropped out of school and traveled to Yemen to “study” under a Sharia scholar (we now know who this scholar was: Anwar al-Awlaki…same guy who preached to Major Nidal Malik Hasan in northern Virginia and the Nigerian Fruit of the Boom bomber.)

The Feds even went so far as to put the Little Rock shooter on a terrorist “watch list” when he got back from Yemen. Then we “watched” as he gunned down two of our soldiers on our city streets.

How many more “trained in Yemen” Jihadis are out there? We clearly don’t know.

Nor do we know who recruited the Little Rock shooter to Islam at Tennessee Tech in the first place. Who paid his way to fly to Yemen? (That is not a cheap plane ticket, especially for a young, African-American college drop-out.) What training regimen did he undergo in Yemen? Who else may he have met while undergoing training? This information was a casualty of the Obama administration’s misguided approach to handling terrorism as a “law enforcement” problem.

We know next to nothing, despite the fact that Al Qaeda has been training there for at least 2 years…

Our intelligence agencies failed to connect the dots when Al Qaeda started training Jihadis from around the world in Yemen and we have failed to gather intelligence from enemy terrorists who have carried out attacks against us.

This combination of intelligence and policy failures has put America and its people at risk and our governmental leaders are either in denial about the threat we face, or they are lying to us about it.

America’s Wrongheaded Approach to Jihad

In the wake of the miraculously failed Christmas day Jihadi attack over the skies of Detroit, we are starting to see our governmental mechanisms crank into gear to institute policies to prevent terrorists from attacking us successfully.

Never mind that it was that very governmental bureaucracy which enabled the Jihadists to penetrate secure areas with explosives and come close to killing 270 people on Christmas day. It was our incompetent governmental bureaucracies which granted a known Jihadi a visa to enter the United States. It was our governmental bureaucracies which let him get on an airliner without a passport. It was our governmental bureaucracies which failed to recognize classic warning signs: ticket paid for in cash, no checked luggage.

Nevertheless, Janet Napolitano, who is evidently conflicted between whether the security system worked like clockwork or failed miserably, has had her department of Homeland Security see to it that no one stands up for the last hour of any flight (an order which has evidently already been rescinded) and Transportation Security personnel are redoubling efforts to tighten access to airliners.

Meanwhile, President Obama managed to tear himself from the links to declare the terrorist an “isolated extremist,” perhaps the worst mischaracterization made by a sitting president since Richard Nixon declared himself “not a crook.” Obama then promised a dragnet to find those responsible. What complete and utter hogwash.

This security and law enforcement approach used against those who are at war with us will never work.

We can button up airliners tighter than a drum and do body cavity searches of passengers and you know what will happen?

The Jihadists will drive a truck loaded with TNT through the front door of the terminal at a major airport the day before Thanksgiving and kill hundreds.

Or they’ll target subways and trains like they did in Madrid, London and Paris.

Or they’ll target shopping malls or schools.

Until we realize that this is a war and not a law enforcement problem and that these terrorists have a common thread, whether they are lone wolves or part of cells, it will keep getting worse.

The problem is Islam. Not Muslims, but Islam as practiced by a core of Muslims who largely control the Islamic world. Their goal is to implement sharia law. Their goal is not for you and me to convert to Islam, but to impose sharia on us. That is what they are fighting for and sharia is their doctrine as well. We ignore this at our peril. The reason for everything they do can be looked up in books that they wrote. Not just the Noble Quran, but books like “Reliance of the Traveler” and “Milestones” and “The Quranic Concept of War.” If you really want to understand where the enemy is coming from, buy these books on Amazon and read them.

Then download Stephen Coughlin’s thesis from the Center for Security Policy web site. It’s free and it should be the handbook for fighting the war of ideas.

There is a global Jihadist insurgency and insurgencies are 80% political/ideological not military. We can win the military side. But we aren’t even fighting the other 80%. And that’s what manufactures guys like this Nigerian, who was, like most Jihadist terrorists, wealthy and educated, even privileged. (This is NOT about poverty; don’t let anyone tell you that.)

The Jihadis are indoctrinated for years in mosques and madrassas. They don’t go “radical” by accident. It is a system. Go to the MEMRI web site and take a look at state-run television in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the Palestinian territories and even Egypt. You will be shocked at what you see and hear, especially on the programs targeted at children. Jihadis are not born. They are created. Furthermore, they aren’t created because the USA supports Israel or because the USA overthrew Saddam Hussein in Iraq or the Taliban in Afghanistan. Their agenda is much wider, longer and deeper than that.

The Jihadists did not slaughter hundreds of school children in Beslan, Russia because the USA supports Israel or because US troops are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Jihadists killed 241 US servicemen in Beirut in 1983, blew up the World Trade Center in 1993, blew up a USAF barracks in 1995, blasted our embassies in east Africa in 1998, attacked the USS Cole in 2000 and flew airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11th 2001 before a single American soldier or Marine set foot in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The Jihadists didn’t kill 200 Australian tourists in Bali, Indonesia because the US supports Israel. They didn’t slaughter dozens in Mumbai, India because the US is in Iraq. They aren’t killing people in southern Thailand because the US is in Afghanistan. And the Islamic insurgency in the Philippines predates all of this.

There must be something else at work.

It’s called Jihad.

You can expect some type of Jihadist incident involving Americans to be in the news every week from now on. Some incidents will be violent Jihad like Fort Hood and Flight 253. Others will be civilizational or “stealth” jihad, such as refusing to allow bomb-sniffing dogs near Muslims based on some notion of religious “freedom.” This is the environment that fighting a politically correct war for 8 years has created. Get used to it.

Let me give you an example of what we’re up against. The best example is Saudi Arabia. Some in the US refer to the Sauds as “allies” in the “war on terrorism.” But if the Sauds are really at war with Al Qaeda and the Jihadists, then why don’t we hear about lots of attempts on the lives of Saudi princes (and there are thousands of Saudi princes)? They are not hard to find. Go to a casino or disco in London or Monte Carlo and you can find them and often without tight security. Since Al Qaeda was founded in 1989, the number of Saudi royals killed by their terrorism stands at 0. In that time, there was only a single documented attempt by an Al Qaeda terrorist on a Saudi prince, who just happened to be the minister of the Interior, in charge of a large portion of security forces.

In Saudi Arabia when you are caught shoplifting, under their Sharia law, you have a good chance of getting your hand chopped off as punishment. A woman gets 100 lashes for the crime of adultery. The Sauds behead people for more serious crimes.

Yet, when a Saudi is caught on the battlefield as a member of Al Qaeda by US forces in Iraq or Afghanistan and is turned over to the Sauds, what happens to them?

They are sent to rehab. In rehab they are issued crayons and paint for art therapy. (I am not joking.) After rehab, they are released.

Why do you suppose this is?

I’ll tell you why. Because they haven’t committed a crime as far as the Sauds are concerned. Shoplifting gets your hand chopped off, Jihad doesn’t even get you a slap on the wrist.

Does anyone still believe that the Sauds are our allies?

The Jihadists get funded, they get trained and they get granted safe haven. This happens a number of ways and from a number of sources and we need to go after them. Use our strengths to go after the ideological and financial and training sources. Until we do, expect this to get worse and worse. Taking our shoes off before getting on the airplane isn’t going to help one damn bit.

Chicago Jihadi Conducted Recon on Nuke Plant for Lashkar-e-Taiba

The Chicago man charged with helping plot the terror attacks one year ago in Mumbai also photographed and conducted surveillance of a nuclear weapons fuel plant in Tromboy, India, according to Indian and U.S. law enforcement authorities.
