New Bill in Congress to Designate Hezbollah as a Drug Trafficker

posted by Christopher W. Holton

Congressmen Ted Budd of North Carolina and Lee Zeldin of New York have filed legislation in Congress that would designated Hezbollah as a drug trafficker.

The bill has been dubbed the Hezbollah Kingpin Designation Act. If the act passes into law, it would evidently empower the Treasury Department to more aggressively target Hezbollah’s finances.

Frankly, while we support the legislation wholeheartedly, we are a bit confused that there needs to be any kind of additional designation to enable any arm of the U.S. government to target Hezbollah more aggressively.

Shouldn’t it be enough that they are designated as a foreign terrorist organization?

Alas, the bill would list Hezbollah under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act of 1999.

We should all be appreciative that Reps Budd and Zeldin conceived of this idea and we should support its expeditious passage.
