Chuck Hagel is Weak on Jihad and Terrorism

President Obama has selected one of the worst possible candidates imaginable to become Secretary of Defense. Chuck Hagel has a history of being weak on Jihad and terrorism, the greatest threat to American lives and national security today.

Hagel’s nomination should become a “teaching moment.” Just because someone served honorably in the uniform of the United States military or has an “R” instead of a “D” after his name, does not automatically mean that the person is strong on national security policy.

Chuck Hagel is as bad on the threat of Jihadist terrorism as anyone in America. Not only has he been on the wrong side of votes on the issue, but his votes demonstrate a lack of commitment on the issue, as well a tendency to enable Jihad:

• Wrong on Iraq

Initially, then-Senator Hagel voted in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to overthrow Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. But when the insurgency did not go so well, Hagel flip-flopped and called for a withdrawal of US troops in just 120 days back in 2007.

Had such a policy been implemented, Al Qaeda and other Jihadist elements would have emerged victorious in Iraq and the US would have been seen as clearly losing Iraq to Al Qaeda. This would have energized Al Qaeda and given it the biggest recruiting boost since the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States homeland. This would have essentially allowed the global jihad to morph at an accelerated rate.

Then, when the US announced the surge counteroffensive in Iraq, Senator Hagel said it would be “the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam, if it’s carried out.”

Hagel is clearly no military strategist. The surge broke the back of the insurgency, drastically reduced the violence in Iraq and allowed the US to draw down its force levels in a secure manner.

To be sure, Iraq is no utopia today, but violence levels there are no where near what they were during the insurgency and, most importantly, Al Qaeda was denied victory in Iraq due to the surge.

Wrong on Hezbollah

In 2006 Hagel was one of a just 11 senators who refused to sign a letter urging the European Union to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization. Hezbollah not only killed 241 Marines, soldiers and sailors in Beirut, Lebanon on 23 October 1983, they also kidnapped and murdered US Marine Colonel William Higgins in 1988 when he was on UN Peacekeeping duty. More recently, Hezbollah was active in fighting US GIs in Iraq and Hezbollah members captured, tortured and killed US GIs in Iraq.

Wrong on Iran

Iranian "art" in Tehran

Iranian “art” in Tehran

Chuck Hagel has a shamefully weak record on Iran, the world’s foremost state sponsor of Jihadist terrorism and a serial proliferator of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles.

His weakness on Iran goes way back to August of 2001 when he was one of just two US Senators to vote against renewal of the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act. The Iran-Libya Sanctions Act was set up to punish entities for investing in Iranian or Libyan petroleum industries, aiming to prevent Tehran or Tripoli from gaining petroleum profits that could be used to develop or acquire weapons of mass destruction or to finance terrorism.

In September 2007, Hagel voted against designating the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity. 76 Senators voted for the bill in an overwhelming bipartisan vote.

In July 2008, Hagel voted in the Senate Banking Committee against legislation imposing sanctions on countries conducting certain business with Iran. The legislation passed 19-2.

In October 2008 Hagel single-handedly killed Senator Gordon Smith’s (R-Oregon) S.970 Iran Counter-Proliferation Act, a bill that had 71 co-sponsors, 36 Republican and 35 Democrat. This act would have strengthened the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act (now referred to simply as the Iran Sanctions Act).

Chuck Hagel: Wrong for America

Leftist pundits are creating a straw man argument by promoting the meme that only the “Jewish lobby” is opposed to Hagel because of his record of not supporting Israel.

This dishonest tactic is merely meant as a smokescreen to mask Hagel’s shamefully weak, longstanding record on Jihad and terrorism primarily directed against the United States and its citizens.

Call and write your Senator and tell him/her to oppose the nomination of Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense. America cannot afford to have someone as weak on Jihadist terrorism as Chuck Hagel.

Algeria: Al-Qaeda ‘recruiting’ illegal aliens for attacks

Just like the United States, Europe has a substantial illegal immigration problem. Most illegal aliens are desperate people who are only seeking a better way of life. A few are criminals and, worse by far, Jihadists.

In Italy, Spain and France, many of the illegal aliens are Moroccans and Algerians.

Reports out of Algeria indicate that Al Qaeda is recruiting illegal aliens from areas in Spain, Italy and France.

This has plenty of relevance for America.

First of all, American diplomatic and economic targets in Europe will be likely targets for Al Qaeda. Second, we have a big illegal alien/border security policy of our own–and it’s not just about poor Mexicans taking jobs from Americans…

Every year, tens of thousands of OTMs–“Other Than Mexicans”–come across our borders. A lot come across from Canada, which is basically the forgotten piece of this entire puzzle. Of those tens of thousands of OTMs, thousands still are “special interest” OTMs.

A special interest OTM is an illegal alien from a nation of terrorism concern, such as state sponsors of terrorism and nations which are known to be breeding grounds for terrorists. A few examples are Iran, Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and several others.

This might be the biggest reason to get our arms around our border security problem, something which is unlikely to happen as long as Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are in charge in Washington…

Newsweek plays waterboy for the enemy

The hopelessly clueless and biased staff at Newsweek has decided that it’s time we realized that radical Islam is a fact of life and just something we have to learn to live with…

Newsweek: The ultimate dhimmis

Newsweek: The ultimate dhimmis

The whole problem is that many of us will NOT live thanks to “radical” Islam. Like the 241 Marines, sailors and soldiers murdered by Hezbollah in Beirut in 1983, the 19 airmen killed at the Khobar Towers in 1996, the 17 sailors killed on board the USS Cole in 2000 and of course the 3000+ innocent Americans killed on 9/11.

Basically what Newsweek is suggesting is that we adopt John Kerry’s concept of getting back to when terrorism was just a nuisance. Terrorism is a loser for the Left. The only way they can be successful politically is if they can convince Americans that there is no terrorist threat.

But what if we get hit again?

The Newsweek cover is sort of a pre-emptive strike by the Left. They’re telling us that we just need to learn to live with terrorism.

Oh, it’s OK to go after Al Qaeda–but only in a law enforcement/criminal setting, not as a war/enemy setting.

Any by no means are we to do anything to address the underlying doctrines that underpin organizations like Al Qaeda and Hezbollah.

The Muslim Brotherhood must be dancing…er…the Muslim Brotherhood must be very satisfied with their friends at Newsweek…

The Jihadists Win in Somalia

Ten days ago, the Pakistanis gave in to the Taliban in NW Pakistan by agreeing to institute Shariah law. The Taliban quickly took that deal simply because, as they themselves said, Shariah law is their main goal.

Most in the West are completely ignorant of the central role that Shariah plays in our enemies’ entire strategy and ideology. The Jihadists don’t necessarily want us to convert to their form of Islam, but they absolutely do find it necessary for Shariah law to the the supreme law of the land the world over.

They got their wish in Somalia yesterday…

Noted Islamist continues to be critical of Al Qaeda

Cliff May of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies has an interesting column in the Washington Times today about Sayyid Imam al-Sharif, aka Dr. Fadl. “Dr. Fadl” was an original ideological supporter of Al Qaeda who has since become critical of the terrorist organization. He has just written a book with some sharp attacks on Ayman al-Zawahiri, the man we are pretty sure heads Al Qaeda.

Here are some interesting quotes from the article, which is linked in full below:

Now Dr. Fadl has returned fire with a new book: “Exposing the Exoneration.” In it, he comes to a conclusion that would not make him popular at Hollywood parties. “Every drop of blood that was shed or is being shed in Afghanistan and Iraq is the responsibility of bin Laden and [al] Zawahri and their followers,” he writes. “Was it not al Qaeda that lit the fuse of sectarian civil war in Iraq, through [the actions of al Qaeda in Iraq commander] Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who killed the Shi’ites en masse? … Can the mentality that caused the loss of an Islamic state that existed in reality, in the Taliban’s Afghanistan – can this mentality be expected to establish an Islamic state in Iraq – in reality, and not on the Internet? And have the Islamic peoples become guinea pigs upon whom bin Laden and al-Zawahri try out their pastime and sport of killing en masse?”Dr. Fadl also faults the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “Ramming America has become the shortest road to fame and leadership among the Arabs and Muslims,” he observes. “[T]o cross the ocean to go to your enemy in its own home and destroy one of its buildings, and [in retaliation] it destroys the Taliban state – and then you claim to be a mujahid – only an idiot would do such a thing.”

*************

The number of Muslims whose death and dispossession al Qaeda has caused in a number of years, in Kenya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Pakistan, and elsewhere, is far greater than the number killed or dispossessed by Israel in Palestine and neighboring countries in 60 years. So all the talk of al Qaeda defending Muslims is a tall tale.”

**************

Finally, Dr. Fadl provides what may be a key insight into how we should fight this war. He says that whenever infidels defeat Muslims, there can be only one explanation: Allah has allowed that as a punishment for the Muslims’ sins. Worth remembering the next time someone tells you that winning battles gets us nowhere, that it only makes martyrs of the militants.
