Airliner Security Leaves Travelers More Vulnerable in Airports

by Christopher W. Holton

Since the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, the federal government has gone to great lengths to keep weaponry of all sorts from finding its way on airliners.

The effectiveness of these measures is open to debate, but the idea has been to prevent items such as explosive devices fashioned in the form of contact lens saline solution bottles, shaving cream cans and the like from finding their way onto an airliner. The TSA is also supposed to be on the lookout for box cutters (and pocket knifes and fingernail files), as well as shoes loaded with explosives.

All of these measures have been reactive–in response to both successful and failed terrorist plots from the past. Such is the nature of our bureaucratic counter terror apparatus. The enemy watches what we do and dreams up more methods to exploit holes and vulnerabilities in the defensive security measures. And, of course, once the enemy tries a new method, successful or otherwise, the TSA modifies its policies to defend against the last attack.

Americans of all philosophies are frustrated by what they perceive as onerous inconveniences and gross invasions of personal privacy.

But that is not the issue that should be of greatest concern to Americans. What should truly concern us all is that the measures that have locked down airliners tighter than a drum have created bottlenecks and choke points in airport terminals, leaving even larger numbers of travelers vulnerable to violent terrorist attack.

One attack on a single airliner has the potential to kill anywhere from dozens to a few hundred innocent passengers. But an attack on a busy airport terminal has the potential to kill several plane loads of innocent travelers before they get on the airplane.

Take a look at the accompanying photographs and the vulnerability is clear. A backpack bomb in a security line would be devastating and the security apparatus is exactly what caused the vulnerability.

To be fair, security lines are not the only vulnerability. Long lines at ticket counters produce huge crowds and bottlenecks as well:

What all this adds up to is an overall air travel industry that is still quite at risk.

Lest you think that I have pointed out a vulnerability that the Jihadists may not have thought of yet, rest assured that the Jihadists have already identified airports as targets for mass casualty attacks.

In fact, there have been two such attacks in recent years, one successful and one failed.

In January 2011, Islamikaze bombers attacked Domodedovo airport in Moscow, killing 35 and wounding 182. This incident is largely forgotten in the West. In fact, it received scant media attention beyond the day of the attack.

The fact that the attackers were believed to have been trained at an Al Qaeda camp in Pakistan should serve as a warning to America. If the Jihadis can train to attack Russian airports, they can train to attack American airports just as well.

The photographs below of the carnage serve as a stark contrast to the photos above showing travelers queuing up to get their tickets or go through security…Note that these photos were taken from camera phones soon after the bombing.

When one compares the photos from the security and ticket counter lines to the photos from Moscow, it is not difficult to grasp the magnitude of the vulnerability.

Moscow was not the only airport attack.

In 2007, two Moslem physicians attempted to blow up the terminal building at Glasgow International Airport in the UK with a VBIED (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device).

The two planned on driving a Jeep Cherokee through the front door and detonating a large bomb upon slamming through  the entrance. Fortunately, their bomb fizzled, but the images below show just how close they came to achieving their evil objective. Given the results from other VBIED attacks in the past in places like Lebanon, Iraq, Kenya and Tanzania, it’s not hard to imagine the horrible effects of a successful attack on a crowded airport terminal.

There is an old saying that he who tries to defend everything defends nothing. What is the answer to these vulnerabilities? No doubt technology will play a prominent role in finding solutions, but we should also consider the fact that while the newly unionized TSA is confiscating nail clippers from soldiers returning from war, making mothers sample their own breast milk, frisking  wheelchair-bound grandmothers and fondling genitalia, they are actually putting all travelers in real danger.

Boko Haram Islamikaze Car Bomb Kills 38 Christians Outside Easter Service in Kaduna, Nigeria

Another Christian Holy Day and another murderous attack by Jihadists in Nigeria. This time 38 Christian worshippers were killed by a vehicle-born explosive device driven into a crowded area near an Easter worship service in the Nigerian city of Kaduna.

This is part of a clear, ongoing effort by Jihadists to exterminate Christianity in Nigeria and establish an Islamic state ruled by Shariah. The Jihadist terrorist group Boko Haram also carried out a series of terrorist attacks on Christian churches on Christmas day the past two years.

Recent intelligence indicates that Boko Haram has become affiliated with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Former Argentine President to face trial for covering up for Hezbollah, Iran; Argentines to re-open investigation into 1994 Bombing

In 1994, 85 innocent civilians were killed in a bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Hundreds more were wounded.

To this day, that bombing is the worst terrorist attack ever to take place on the South American continent.

The bombing is believed to have been a joint operation of Hezbollah and the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Arrest warrants were issued in the case through Interpol for five Iranians and a Lebanese back in 2007. The Lebanese was Imad Fayez Mugniyeh, Hezbollah’s military commander. Mugniyeh lost his head and “assumed room temperature” when he was killed in Syria a couple of years ago when an explosive in the head rest of his car detonated while he was sitting in the seat.

Recently there has been a new development in the case.

Former Argentine President Carlos Menem has been indicted for obstruction of justice for diverting attention away from Iran’s role in the bombing. Evidence indicates that Menem received millions of dollars deposited in a secret Swiss bank account.

In addition to the indictment of Menem, Argentina has announced that they are opening a new investigation into the bombing.

The Jihad in Thailand Escalates Sharply; Attack Likely Meant to be Thai 9/11

The Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel under attack in Hat Yai, Thailand. Note Western fast food outlets in immediate vicinity.

There has been a coordinated mass casualty attack in Thailand, with aspects eerily similar to the 1993 World Trade Center attack.

Regular readers of TTB may recall 3 years ago when we first covered the Jihadist insurgency in Southern Thailand:

https://terrortrendsbulletin.wordpress.com/2009/03/14/thailand-the-war-youve-never-heard-of/

Some 5,000 people have been killed in that conflict since 2004. The aim of the Jihadists is largely the same as that of Jihadist insurgents everywhere: the establishment of an Islamic state ruled by Shariah law.

Before we weigh in on the latest atrocity committed by the Jihadists in southern Thailand, new readers can familiarize themselves with the conflict by checking out the numerous posts we’ve dedicated to this theater in the global Islamic insurgency:

https://terrortrendsbulletin.wordpress.com/category/thailand/

The Jihad in southern Thailand took a major turn for the worse overnight when the Jihadists detonated 3 car bombs and 1 motorcycle bomb, killing 14 and wounding 340.

The number of killed and wounded have climbed throughout the day since the initial reports came in this morning.

The AP first reported 8 dead and 68 wounded. A couple of hours later CNN reported 10 dead and 100 wounded. Then the AP reported 14 dead and 340 wounded. This indicates that Western news agencies have no one near the scene and are dependent on reports from stringers and local news agencies.

That is rather typical of the coverage of this conflict has received all along. No one has really paid attention. The so-called mainstream media has largely ignored the conflict and wants to believe that all such conflicts are strictly born of local issues. The idea of a global Islamic insurgency goes squarely against the narrative that the media rolls out on such conflicts as the ones raging in Thailand, the Philippines, Somalia, Nigeria and elsewhere.

At any rate, this latest series of bomb attacks represents a serious escalation of the violence. This is by far the largest casualty count for an attack by the Jihadists in Thailand and the attack is by far the most planned out and orchestrated.

This could very well indicate the infusion of foreign funding, know-how, training or even Jihadis into southern Thailand.

Sites of terrorist attacks in Southern Thailand

The bombs were detonated in shopping and dining areas frequented by tourists in Yala city. The first bomb was followed by a detonation designed to inflict casualties on samaritans, onlookers and first responders at the same site. This is a common tactic used by Jihadists around the globe. By taking out first responders, any subsequent blast makes authorities appear incompetent or helpless to protect or render aid to victims.

Another image of the Yala City car bomb attack

Sure enough, while the media was still reporting on the “twin blasts” in Thailand, a third blast occurred in the basement parking lot of a high-rise hotel (the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel) in the nearby city of Hat Yai. At about the same time, a motorcycle bomb was detonated wounding a police officer.

Smoke victims at scene of Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel bombing in Thailand

This was clearly a coordinated, planned assault designed to instill fear in the population, make the Jihadis appear more formidable than they have been seen previously and cause chaos.

It is also probable that the attack failed in an apparent key goal. The fact that a car bomb was detonated in the basement of a high rise building is very reminiscent of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. That attack was designed to bring the twin towers down and most of the casualties it ended up causing were due to smoke inhalation. The same is evidently true of this attack in Thailand.

It is almost certain that the Jihadis meant to bring that building in Thailand down.

This was meant to be Thailand’s September 11th: a coordinated series of attacks with massive casualties. It is tragic that innocent people lost their lives and were injured, but it is likely that the attacks fell short of their goals and caused fewer casualties than they were intended to inflict.

Complete Wrap up of Toulouse Jihadi Saga

Jihad has returned to France.

In the past 10 days a Muslim gunman killed and wounded French soldiers, schoolchildren and other innocent civilians in cowardly attacks. The terrorist, Mohammed Merah, was killed in excellent work by France’s GIGN-RAID personnel. It is worth mentioning that the media bent over backwards to avoid labeling these attacks Jihadist terrorism. In the early days of this episode, the media, notably CNN, actually labeled the shooter a “serial killer.” A serial killer that targets soldiers and Jewish children??? Who do the media think they’re fooling?

Below is a brief review of the events as reported in international media.

Short video here. Note one inaccuracy in report that states that the terrorist was found dead and it was not determined whether he killed himself or was shot. Other footage reveals definitively that he was shot while trying to leap from the balcony of his apartment…

French gunman had no Al Qaeda connection, says official

The media’s profound confusion continues. Somehow they think we can all find comfort if a Jihadist terrorist is found to not be a card-carrying member of Al Qaeda. The opposite may be true. It may be MORE dangerous to have Jihadi individuals and cells operating in the West who have merely been “inspired” by Al Qaeda. Still, in this case, it appears from reports elsewhere that Merah was a known Jihadi who did indeed spend time in Afghanistan and Pakistan as recently as 2010…

In the wake of the attacks in France, Europol’s chief is warning of a new wave of Jihad in Europe. He correctly points out that “inspired Jihadis” or “Lone Wolves” acting independently of any centralized command authority after receiving training present a whole set of challenges of their own. For instance, it’s very difficult to infiltrate a movement made up of such people, much more difficult than running counterintelligence operations against a Baader-Meinhoff gang or Red Brigades, or even the Provo IRA, such as were prevalent in the terrorist era of the 1980s…

Finally, here is a hard-hitting editorial that justifiably lambasts the media for its clear contortions to avoid admitting that the attacks in Toulouse were most likely the work of a Jihadi. The Western media speculated openly that the gunman must have been a Neo-Nazi or perhaps a “serial killer.” EVERYONE else in the world knew the truth. Only one class of barbarian targets soldiers and Jewish children…We wish we could say that we are hopeful that the media has learned a lesson from all this, but we know better…

An Update on the Jihad in Thailand

Back in 2009, TTB published an article called “Thailand: The Jihad You’ve Never Heard Of:”

https://terrortrendsbulletin.wordpress.com/2009/03/14/thailand-the-war-youve-never-heard-of/

In the early days of this blog, that article was one of our most popular, perhaps because most folks had no idea that thousands of people had been killed since 2004 in an Islamic insurgency in southern Thailand.

Here we are over two and a half years later and the insurgency in Thailand is still going on. In fact, it’s getting worse. The Thais seem to be trying the same strategy and tactics that have failed elsewhere in the world: appeasement, accommodation and throwing money at the problem after blaming the violence on a bad economy.

The Jihadis are getting more sophisticated. They are making greater use of powerful IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). This is no coincidence. The terrorists didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to put bombs under and alongside roads. Someone is training them. And if the region is so impoverished, then someone is funding them. Obviously, it follows that someone is providing training as well. All of this after indoctrination in mosques. Thai authorities deny these realities at their peril.

For more background on this, check out our previous posts on the war in southern Thailand…

Particularly note this quote from one of our previous posts:

Note that the Thai Jihadists have never made any public statements since the violence started back in 2004. 4,000 people have been killed in the insurgency, but no demands have been issued and no goals announced. This is classic Jihadist warfare. They are not fighting because they want something from the non-Muslims or the government. They are fighting a war of elimination…

https://terrortrendsbulletin.wordpress.com/2009/12/19/the-muslim-insurgency-in-southern-thailand-continues/

https://terrortrendsbulletin.wordpress.com/2010/07/03/thailand-more-violence-from-the-jihad-you-never-heard-of/

Now compare that to this passage from an article published this week by the Christian Science Monitor:

Among the detainees at the army base was a 30-something Muslim man who gave his name as Amatsydee. Sitting on a bed in his cell, he patiently explained, in passable Thai, that he had been detained because the authorities accuse him of assisting a “group of bad people.”

Asked about the reason for insurgent attacks in the region, “I don’t know how to say it,” he said, looking up at a burly guard standing beside him. “My Thai isn’t very good.”

Anyone else see a pattern here?

Here is the update on the violence in Thailand from the Christian Science Monitor in an article entitled “Muslim insurgency in Thailand’s restive south heats up.”

http://www.intellasia.net/news/articles/society/111338571.shtml

Lebanese News Website: Hezbollah intends to attack Western targets

According to the Lebanese news website, the Beirut Observer, the Jihadist terrorist organization Hezbollah is planning to attack Western targets. The site based  its report on information obtained by a “Western intelligence agency” that intercepted message traffic to that effect.

The Observer reported that unnamed Western intelligence officials think that Hezbollah plans to attack Western targets, based  on unusual movement of suspected Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guards operatives.

The article claimed that the goal of the attack would be to distract global public opinion from indictments expected to be handed down by a special UN tribunal investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Rafik Hariri

It has been widely speculated that the UN tribunal will accuse Hezbollah members of involvement in the huge bomb attack on Hariri’s motorcade.

According to the Israeli news site Haaretz, earlier this week Israel’s counter terrorism bureau issued a warning that terrorists intended to carry out attacks against Israelis and Jewish targets abroad, specifying India, Thailand, Greece and Turkey as areas where an attack could take place. It is not known if the Israeli bulletin is related to the report on Hezbollah from the Beirut Observer.

Al Qaeda is known to be active in Turkey, where anti-Israeli sentiment has been on the rise for some time as Islamists expand and consolidate their political power. In addition to Hezbollah, Al Qaeda or other Turkish Jihadist groups could be motivated to attack Israeli or Jewish targets in Turkey.

Of course, India has been inflicted with a virtual menagerie of Jihadist terrorist groups, both domestic and from neighboring Pakistan. Lashkar-e-Taiba pulled off the spectacular Mumbai attacks targeting Jewish targets, but it is far from the only group operating in India, any of which could be prompted to attack Israeli or Jewish targets in India, either of their own volition or in the service of allied organizations.

Thailand has been wracked by a Jihadist insurgency for years in its southern regions. The Thai Jihadists are somewhat of an enigma and their ties to other Jihadist groups are unclear, but Thailand is an enormously popular tourist destination for Israeli and European tourists.

There is known to be Al Qaeda activity in Greece and Al Qaeda operatives have been apprehended there.

What all this adds up to is we could be talking about one threat or two distinct threats, one reported by the Beirut Observer from Hezbollah and another from Israeli authorities from unnamed terrorists in the four nations mentioned.

The possibility of Hezbollah launching attacks against the West in either Europe or the US has long been a deep concern for national security and counterterrorism practitioners. Hezbollah has been in existence for a decade longer than Al Qaeda and has been amply funded and equipped by Iran. Hezbollah is a much larger organization than Al Qaeda and is known to have cells, operatives and sympathizers spread throughout the world, including Asia, Europe and North and South America. Hezbollah has been referred to as the “A” team of Jihadist terrorism and Al Qaeda the “B” team. In fact Hezbollah trained Al Qaeda terrorists in Sudan during the 1990s.

Hezbollah is uniquely qualified to carry out terrorist attacks in the West. Such an attack would certainly not be unprecedented.

Hezbollah is believed to have carried out two bomb attacks in Argentina against the Israeli embassy in 1992 and at a Jewish Community Center in 1994. More than 120 innocent civilians were killed in those attacks. The attacks are also believed to have been carried out with Iranian support.

This makes sense since Hezbollah receives funding, arms and training from Iran, especially through Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

An example of suspicious Iranian activity in support of possible terrorist strikes occurred in New York back from 2002 to 2006 when members of the Iranian UN mission were repeatedly caught by the NYPD for conducting obvious reconnaissance of New York landmarks and subways.

We can be sure that, when and if Hezbollah or Iran decide to strike in the West, the targets were already selected and prepped by operatives in place long before the attack occurs.

Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad (Carlos Bledsoe) Confesses to More Murderous Jihad

Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, (formerly known as Carlos Bledsoe) who reportedly studied jihad with an Islamic scholar in Yemen, is being tried for the shooting of two US Army soldiers outside a Little Rock, Arkansas armed forces recruiting office in the spring of 2009.

Tennessee's murdering Jihadist terrorist Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad

Muhammad shot Private William Long and Private Quinton I. Ezeagwula. Long died from his wounds.

Since that incident we have learned more about Muhammad’s violent actions after he returned from Yemen. For example, we have learned that he attempted to fire bomb the house of a Nashville rabbi with a Molotov cocktail.

Now we learn that Muhammad has cryptically confessed to another killing. In a letter to the Arkansas judge presiding over his trial for the recruiting center shootings, Muhammad claims that he killed another person back in 2006 because that person was robbing and harassing Muslims.

Muhammad has not offered any clues as to who the victim was or exactly where this crime may have occurred, only that it was in his home state of Tennessee. The only good news here is that Muhammad is already being tried for capital murder for his 2009 crime. Hopefully he will be convicted in quick order and will sooner, rather than later, have a date with a needle.

But we suspect that perhaps Muhammad is not so ready to go to paradise to meet his 72 virgins and is dangling this tidbit in hopes of getting some sort of leverage for leniency:

“If you agree not to seek the death penalty, I will tell you all about this other guy I killed.”

We hope his ruse does not work, though we realize that it may be several years before he meets the executioner.

What really bothers us though is the media seem to be bending over backwards to avoid investigating this guy’s activity. He converted to Islam and flew to Yemen for training and then came back and started killing Americans (and tried to set fire to a Nashville rabbi’s home with a Molotov cocktail).

Yet we see no press curiosity as to who approached him to convert to Islam in the first place, how he was recruited to Jihad or how he got to Yemen and back…

What happened to investigative journalism? Why isn’t someone going to the mosque at Tennessee Tech where he converted to ask a few questions? What turned Carlos Bledsoe into a monster named Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad? Was he a member of the Muslim Students Association? Who else from that mosque went to Yemen? If Bledsoe was involved with the MSA, what, if any, role did that group, or some of its members, play in his transformation to Islamic Jihadist?

Why isn’t anyone asking these questions?
